Easter in Andalusia

Easter is one of the religious holidays that are the most important in Spain and is celebrated throughout the country. But if there is an autonomous community which lives with particular fervor, that is Andalusia. Thousands of tourists flock to Andalusia along this special week that is in the first full moon of spring. This Christian festival commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus, but also its ordeal.

Holy Week begins with the end of Lent (from Sunday to Easter Wednesday) and ends with the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Sunday of the Resurrection). About 60 guilds leave in procession with pictures of the Virgin and Jesus to the delight of tourists and locals.

The processions are organized parades involving penitents and Nazarenes who bear candles. Usually instrumental music can be heard in its path, unless the procession is a silent one. The Seville Holy Week is very special. This is one of the most important in Spain. It enjoys an international reputation within the Catholic world and was declared an event of International Tourist Interest. But besides a religious holiday, Easter is a cultural value.
